It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved co-founder, Bill Carson.
Bill didn’t just help build the Orchard at Altapass — he lived it. He spent countless years restoring and caring for this place, and even in retirement, most weekends still found him right here, giving his time and his heart to the Orchard he loved so deeply.
You could almost always find Bill doing one of two things:
–Sharing stories with Orchard guests — usually about the history of the Orchard and the Revolutionary War, but always drawing visitors into the deeper meaning of this place; or
–Standing on the dance floor — his absolute favorite spot — smiling wide and moving to traditional mountain music with anyone and everyone willing to share a dance.

Bill had a rare gift. He could take a first-time visitor and, by the time they left, turn them into a true Orchard lover. He believed fiercely in the beauty here — the history, the music, the heirloom apples, and the community — and he loved sharing it with anyone who would listen.
Those of us at the Orchard loved Bill. Truly.
And we know so many of you did, too.
We are grateful beyond words for the years he gave, the stories he told, the laughter he sparked, and the spirit he poured into this mountain.
His presence will be deeply missed — but his legacy will always live on here, in the music, in the stories, and in the heart of the Orchard at Altapass.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his daughter Jill, granddaughters Erzsi, Kati, Grace, and Frances, and the rest of the Carson family. We care about each of you and are praying for you during this difficult time.

Celebration of Life
A celebration of Bill’s life and accomplishments is being planned for August 8, 2026, at the Orchard. We will post details of the celebration as they are available.
