The Orchard at Altapass offers opportunities to become part of the Orchard family either in the field, the General Store, or with the administrative staff. Positions can be part- or full-time, and are primarily seasonal, unless specifically noted. Below are the available openings.

Education & Conservation Coordinator

The Orchard at Altapass through a partnership with Conservation Trust for North Carolina (CTNC) is seeking an AmeriCorps Altapass Education & Conservation AmeriCorps Coordinator.

The Coordinator will provide environmental education to students, community members, and businesses, and help recruit volunteers for ecological programs that will connect children and families to land management and conservation with a focus on the impact of climate change. They will advance the work of the Orchard and CTNC’s land protection work through visitor interactions, community engagement, and partnerships.

This position provides a unique experience to learn how partners work together to engage with and educate the visitors to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Altapass Orchard, as well as audiences within local communities.

Location: The Orchard at Altapass, 1025 Orchard Rd, Spruce Pine, NC 28777, USA (Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 328.3) 

Term: 11 months (Sept 1, 2022 – July 31, 2023) 

Deadline: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Start date: September 1, 2022.

Hours: Full time between 38-40 hours a week with a minimum of 1700 service hours completed by final day of service. A part-time or flexible schedule may be accommodated if requested; Although primarily during regular working hours, weekend programs and responsibilities may be required, including but not limited to staffing the Orchard during peak visitation (late summer and fall), and outreach to Parkway visitors on busy weekends. Long work days and weekend work may be offset by equal time off (comp. time) the following week. 

Compensation: The Resilience Corps NC (an AmeriCorps program housed with the Conservation Trust for NC) stipend is $19,859 for 11 months (1700 hours minimum), health insurance reimbursement for premiums for self-purchased plans, childcare assistance, housing stipend, and professional development opportunities. They are also eligible for SNAP benefits. Those completing the program (fulfilling service requirements of service hours) will receive a Segal Education Award of $6,495 from the National Service Trust.

Agricultural Farm Worker

Position open immediately

Responsible to: Field Manager/Executive DirectorJob Description: The Agricultural Farm Worker has a specific and important role at the Orchard. The purpose of this position is to assist the Field Manager in the physical upkeep and appearance of all Orchard property and apple production.

  • Mowing
  • Weed eating
  • Chemical mowing
  • Pruning trees
  • Grafting and gathering scion wood (if needed)
  • Cleaning and bagging apples
  • Protecting young trees from animal damage
  • Alerting Field Manager of any required maintenance and assisting in repairs
  • Keeping grounds and designated spaces in safe and clean condition
  • Keeping basement clean and orderly
  • Planting trees
  • Properly storing chemicals and other hazardous materials
  • Equipment and facility maintenance as needed
  • Maintaining Orchard trails and signage
  • Follow company policies and procedures
  • Willingness to complete any additional tasks as directed by Field Manager or Executive Director
  • Must be able to operate large machinery (i.e., tractor)
  • Ability to work with other employees
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Willingness to learn and take on different jobs
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must like working outside
  • Comfortable using small equipment
Additional requirements (for specific reason and requested by the Executive Director or Field Manager):
  • Driving tractor for hayrides
  • Building and facility maintenance in the Grill, Barn, Store, and Office
  • Special Event help including, but not limited to, directing traffic, setting up and taking down tables, picking up and removing trash. **

Position is full-time hourly.
Must have current North Carolina driving license.
All employees subject to drug and background checks.
